A wireless router is a networking device that connects to a modem; the modem allows you to connect several networking devices such as printers, computers, and scanners among others to the internet for the ease of resource sharing. Here are a few things you need to consider when choosing the best wireless router 2017.
Single band or dual band This refers to the frequency of signal transmission that the router possesses. The choice of band will automatically depend on how often you use the internet in your home. If the internet is intended for the home office, baby monitors and the likes then the single band is the way to go as it transmits a frequency of 2.4 GHZ. The dual band is ideal for larger offices as it transmits on both 2.4GHZ frequency and 5GHZ frequency. Range This refers to the distance the router can transmit its frequency on; some routers will cover a range of about 150 feet while others will cover 300 feet. The range can however be affected by a few physical factors like wind, obstacles such as bricks and walls and is therefore best placed in a location where the signal can easily be transmitted. Wired Ports As much as the router is intended for wireless purposes, it is important to get one that offers wired ports, this way you can easily connect your computer directly to the router especially when there is no need of the data to be shared across the house. It may also come in handy when other devices like the modem fails you and you need to connect to the internet. USB Functionality Some routers offer the USB port for the use of USB functionality. One may want to connect a printer directly to the router before it has been configured. This USB port will always come in handy, you can also connect it with other portable devices that will enable you to share files across the network especially when other networking devices are failing you. Security A good router should always be secured, if not your network will easily be accessed and automatically leave you vulnerable to hackers and other malicious intruders out there. There are different security measures available depending on the one that works for you. WEP, WPA, WPA2 are just but a few. They all work the same but some have stronger features than others. They protect your internet by creating a pass code that is encrypted so that no one can get through the network. Antennae Design There are two types of antennas, internal and external. Most routers these days come with internal antennas as it is cleaner and looks better in design. The external antenna however is advantageous in the sense that it gives a better range and a clear signal as compared to the internal antennae. Some antennas may be short while others are longer depending on the make of the router.
